Chapter twenty-nine

Allard and Beauregard let themselves into the lobby. The hallway smelled like moldering wood and the floorboards creaked under their weight. They climbed the steps and then Beauregard watched the hall while Allard scrubbed the lock. The pick rasped against the tumblers. The bolt opened with a soft click that echoed along the stairwell and both agents winced. Allard gripped the knob in his left, turned it fully and drew his pistol in his right. Beauregard nodded and pulled a Sig Sauer P229 from his hip holster. They went through the door fast and quiet, guns up, looking for targets but a quick search proved the place empty and Beauregard flicked a light switch.

Claudette gripped Sam’s elbow painfully hard and pointed to the third floor window where a light burned behind dirt streaked glass. Her face paled and her eyes shined in the dim shadows of the alleyway. Her lips barely moved as she whispered, “I turned out the lights when we left.”

Sam felt a bolt of panic go ripping down her spine and take root in her belly. French police had finally caught up with her. She took a second to make sure Bhati’s cash was secure in the leather pack and then threw a leg over the scooter. “Get on.”

“Um…” Claudette started to shake her head. She liked the excitement of having a fugitive on her couch, but this was getting a little too real. The truth was plain on her face. It was no longer fun and games.

Sam grasped her arm. “You will be arrested for aiding and abetting.”

That made her mind up in a hurry. She climbed on the scooter and wrapped her arms around Sam’s midsection, sending a jolt of pain racing up her back.

“Not too tight,” Sam warned her. She twisted the key and the little motor wheezed an electric cough. The headlight sprang to life and then dimmed. Sam kicked the stand with her heel and twisted the throttle. The scooter surged forward with a whine of agony. Together, Sam and Claudette weighed less than two-hundred and thirty pounds, but even that was a strain for the minuscule engine. The needle jumped to fifteen, then labored up to twenty.

They raced along the narrow passage and hung a left on the main boulevard. Sam spotted the government issue sedan and Laurent in the backseat. He saw her at the same time. Their eyes met. His brows climbed halfway up his forehead and he lunged over the seats. Sam swallowed a curse and gave the throttle a hard wrench. The speedometer struggled past thirty, toward forty. The handlebars shook and rattled, like the scooter was coming apart in her hands.

A car horn started bleating out a mad staccato. Sam looked once over her shoulder and almost paid the price for taking her eyes off the road. Claudette shrieked and Sam whipped her head back around in time to see a green Passat turn the corner. She jerked the handlebars and sent the scooter sliding around a turn, wheels skipping over paving stones.
